The Story

Bristol Beer Factory was founded in 2004 by future Bristol mayor George Ferguson (an architect), Chris Godden, and Simon Bartlett (who had spent years building breweries for Guinness). The trio established the brewery in the former Ashton Gate Brewery. In 2020, the brewery went entirely gluten free across its keg and can range, with cask following in 2025. Their position is that making a beer gluten free should not be a compromise on quality. BBF has raised over £500,000 for local charities through its Brewed to Give initiative and donates 2% of sales to Bristol charities.

GF approach: Gluten reduced using the Clarex enzyme. Beers are brewed with traditional barley and other grains, then treated with Clarex during conditioning to break down gluten below 20ppm. Recipes modified to reduce wheat, rye, and oats. All beers independently lab tested. Went fully GF on keg and can in 2020, cask in 2025.
